Excellently staged and you can wisely dialogued, it has no great issue in way of living off their very unattractive name.” [ 8 ]

This new film’s author and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess video game, getting mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) did at the casino and you can old an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic script, new cast’s suavely regulated gestures away from like and you will risk, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will fashionably assertive images (along with their political conscience) get this pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle a low profile vintage of style.” [ ten ]

While the patch follows a common development, the fresh characterizations try new in addition to shows good enough in order to overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and you may topical, preventing the emotional, phoney touching. Uncommon camera angles come along occasionally so you can heighten interest and you may temporarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing since movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, brand spanking new copywriter and you will member producer, and additionally supports rendering it a delicate design.” [ eleven ]

It is generally a question of enjoying Mr. Powell undergo their paces stylishly if you’re a huge cast from actors and you can stars give your customary assistance. Evelyn Keyes performs the great absolutely nothing lady exactly who brings out the finest in your and you may Ellen Drew is the smooth and you can slinky vixen whom becomes him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is fatty since the villain and Lee J. Cobb do another ready journey given that a weary cops inspector just who in the long run closes happening. Many consuming and puffing is completed of the the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
